Regular diagnosis is very important to your vehicles as it enables you to know the status of your car to prevent future faults or unexpected occurrences.

As things become more digital these days, the best way to diagnose is with the aid of a professional car diagnostic tool that shows the status of your car's mechanical and electrical systems saving you both time, resources and money.

This simple professional car diagnostics tool is known as the Onboard diagnostic tool. An electronic onboard tool that makes it possible to detect errors and faults in your car system so you could fix them easily and quickly.

You can read more about OBD-2 diagnostics tools here.

However, to connect your car systems to the OBD-2 devices, you'll need the OBD2 cables and OBD2 connectors which we are talking about in this article. We will let you know everything you need to know about these OBD2 accessories, so you'll be able to use the OBD2 devices effectively.

What are OBD2 cables and connectors?

First, we need to know about the OBD2 port. An OBD2 port is a 16-PIN trapezoid-shaped port. The OBD2 cable connector is connected to this port which helps convert faults codes into readable format on the OBD2 device screen.

The OBD2 connector is one end of the cable connected to the OBD2 port of the car. While the other end connects to the OBD2 scanner/device. This other end connector can come with a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter which might be helpful to connect wirelessly to a laptop or mobile phone to access the software application.

Cables are (with connectors) insulated wire cords with a protective casing used in transmitting the electrical signals across the OBD2 system and the car's electrical dashboard.

    Where's the connector located?

It is important first to know if your vehicle is OBD2 enabled, this you can know through your owner's manual or by checking beneath your car's dashboard (drivers side) which is the most common place the OBD2 connector can be found.  If your vehicle is manufactured after 1996, be assured it should be OBD2 enabled.

Why do you need an OBD2 Cable and Connector?

To diagnose your car using the OBD2 device or software diagnostic tool you'll need to connect the car OBD interface port to the OBD2 device or software and the OBD2 cables and OBD2 connectors make that easily possible for you. At other times you can use the OBD2 adapter which can help connect easily to a Laptop or mobile phone Bluetooth for software usage.

How to use OBD2 cable and connection

All you have to do is use the OBD2 adapter is a connector and the cable and plug your cable into the OBD2 port. You might need to ignite the vehicle's engine before data is sent to your OBD2 device which evaluates your onboard memory and electronics to discover unknown faults.
